The US state of Texas has officially stopped funding the construction of the border wall with Mexico under its new budget plan.
Report informs via the Texas Tribune that the decision comes four years after Governor Greg Abbott announced that Texas would become the first state to build its own border wall.
"Lawmakers have quietly ended funding for the project, leaving only a few completed sections covering a small portion of the border," the publication notes.
Out of the approximately 1,295 kilometers (around 805 miles) of territory allocated for wall construction, only 8% has been completed—at a cost of over $3 billion to taxpayers.
The initiative to build the wall, aimed at curbing illegal migration, was first introduced by former US President Donald Trump during his term from 2017 to 2021. However, the wall remains largely unfinished to this day.
